Sacramento County: help paying for grab bars, ramps and home modifications
Sacramento has one of the clearer setups in the state. SHRA, the regional housing agency, funds Rebuilding Together's Safe at Home program for grab bars and similar safety changes, and runs its own Home Repair Program for urgent hazards. Which program you can use depends on your city, so check the area served.
Programs that install or pay for home modifications
Rebuilding Together Sacramento: Safe at Home
Run by: Rebuilding Together Sacramento (nonprofit), partly funded by SHRA
Who it serves
Sacramento County and the City of West Sacramento (Safe at Home also covers El Dorado and north San Joaquin counties). Rancho Cordova residents use a separate application.
What work it does
Safety changes such as shower and bathroom grab bars, smoke, fire and CO detectors, and transition ramps. RTS says ramps and some features depend on the property and aren't guaranteed. People at high risk of falling may get an assessment and fall-prevention education from a licensed occupational therapist.
Who qualifies
Homeowners who live in the home and have low to moderate income (limits are in the application).
Cost to you
No cost to eligible low-income homeowners, according to SHRA.
How to apply
Apply online or download the application (also in Spanish) from the RTS programs page. Call 916-455-1880 or email [email protected]. RTS says the average wait is 3 to 4 weeks. To ask for the OT visit, write "Interested in Occupational Therapist consultation" on your application.
SHRA Home Repair Program (formerly the Emergency Repair Program)

Who it serves
City of Sacramento, the cities of Galt, Folsom and Isleton, and unincorporated Sacramento County. Not Citrus Heights, Rancho Cordova or some parts of Elk Grove.
What work it does
Repairs that fix an immediate health or safety hazard, as listed in SHRA's Home Repair Program Definitions. SHRA says it does not have funding for roof replacement.
Who qualifies
Very low-income owner-occupants of single-family homes or mobile homes.
Cost to you
Grant-funded repair help. Confirm any cost or conditions when you call.
How to apply
Call SHRA at 916-440-1317. Intake opens when funds are available.

Who qualifies
